Delight

Sam was napping this afternoon in his co-sleeper when all of a sudden he started gurgling and then giggling. I peeked into the bed and he had his eyes open and was laughing. Then, just as quickly, he closed his eyes and went back into a deep sleep.

Got Milk?

There are few things in this scary as running out of milk. It's what we use to get Ben down for a nap and at night and it is a most important morning coffee ingredient. So this morning you can imagine how my heart sank when I found the milk container empty. Luckily I found some half and half. I thought "if whole milk is good, this will be even better". Turns out that a latte with half and half is just bad. Who'd have thunk?

The Science of Coffee

_MG_0050_02.jpgI have noticed that most blogs are offering new year's greetings and resolutions for what they want to achieve/change in 2008. Well, you won't find that here. It is 8:00 in the morning and I have already ripped my pajama bottoms on a loose nail we've been meaning to fix since we moved in and I have spilled my cup of coffee on the couch. Looks like the date change on the calendar will have little effect on me. Coffee pays an important role in this house. It was one of Ben's first words. The coffee machine beeping is an important part of his day. He loves to say "coffee's ready". Josh told me a story that one of his co-workers shared about how when he came home the other day, he got a beer out of the fridge and his son said, "Oh good daddy. You've got your beer." I think that's how Ben feels about us and coffee. He know that mean mommy is 'before coffee' and patient (okay, MORE patient) mommy is 'after coffee'. And every morning I play a little race game with the espresso maker. I try to put the milk under the steamer spout at the very last minute and if I do it too late I miss the steaming process and have to microwave the milk instead, which makes the coffee taste kind of crummy. I had to do that this morning. Ugh. I even came up with a system to put the cup on my wooden yoga block so I don't have to hold it during the steaming process. Yes. I AM THAT LAZY. I wonder if the manufacturers of the yoga block had this usage in mind? Somehow I doubt it.

Big Day

Saturday was a big day. Ben got his haircut in the morning and he was none too happy about it (as you can see). Then we went to Phil's Ice House and had hot dogs and then of course HAD to get ice cream at Amy's next door. After all that went home and took a nap. All that fun and food was exhausting.

The Apocalypse

Dreyer's came out with an American Idol series of ice creams. The end is near. And not only that but my photography website has been down for three days and I have spent a total of about 3 hours on hold/talking with the webhost techs. And on four separate phone calls I have gotten four different answers as to what the problem is (which they of course promise will be quickly resolved just to get me off the phone). If all of that were not bad enough, I had to buy Pepperidge Farm bagels today. PEPPERIDGE FARM! They're about as Jewish as George Bush. Oy!

Dim Sum

The other night we had dumplings, which are Ben's favorite. Josh takes him to the Asian market and lets him have his pick. We savored the yummy treats while Sam looked on longingly. It's just not the same when they come out in breast milk.

Stop Wishing It All Away

I am often wishing for life to speed up. For the kids to get to a place where they are more independent and I can have more of my freedom back. I know that I will regret this. That time will slip past me too quickly. And before I know it, they will no longer need me in the same way that they do now. I know that I need to relish the moments and that they are fleeting. I need to remind myself constantly of how lucky I am and what a gift these babies are to me.

Not a Creature Was Stirring

I realize these photos are out of order since I have already posted photos from Christmas day and these are of the night before, but I am an out of order kind of girl. We went to our good friends the Simon's house for Christmas Eve and some fondue.I must admit that I did miss my family's traditional "white dinner" that we have the night before Xmas. What is a white dinner you ask? It consists of my grandmother's chicken and dumplings, grits, and mashed potatoes. The only color you see on the plate is a bit of greenery from the green bean casserole, but that barely peeks its way through the fried onion topping. We pass out anti-heart attack medication with the after dinner mints. But the fondue was scrumptious. What's not to like? Bread and cheese. Our sitter Meagan told me a great line the other day—a balanced diet is a cookie in each hand. I think this rule could also apply to bread in one hand and cheese in the other. I think my favorite photo in this lot is the one below of Josh holding the Shiner. It's so Texas. Not to mention a rare shot of Josh drinking a brewski. He is usually more of a cocktail kind of guy. One more thing to love about him.
